I asked the people I normally exchange Christmas gifts with, if we could do a phone call or in person visit instead. My suggestion was well received.
I am not a phone talker but the two friends I talked to long distance were so happy to have a listening ear that one conversation lasted 3 hours, the other 5! The in-person visit was 3.5 hours.
This really brought to mind that people want quality time…just a listening, caring ear to tell all their stuff to.
Christmas is about Jesus and He wants us to love your neighbor as yourself. I stumbled upon a much better form of gift giving than material goods exchange.
Did you or would you consider stopping gift exchanges and replace them with your listening ear?
P.S. This was written before Christmas and I still wanted to write about it. I’m sorry for the delay.
Happy New Years!

Happy New Year! And what a lovely idea. People are so lonely these days. Real communication and attentive listening is hard to come by.

Happy new year Paula! I am trying to figure out how to lessen tax time hours so I can be more attentive to others. π€

I love the picture of the rotary phone! I was just talking with someone about one the other day. I then had to look up funny rotary phone memes to share with my 6 friends who are going through difficult times, and get a smile, via email, from me every day! Love you sister!

How nice of you! What’s the scripture for encouraging others…building up through words. Or memes. Heehee Love you too.

If I recall it correctly, it was in the 70s of the last century that a young entrepreneur made a good income with an ad in a major city’s newspaper: “Call xxx-yyy-zzzz and I will listen to your for $5 for 15 minutes, $9 for 30, or $15 per hour.” That was a hefty hourly rate back then, just a little less than a psychiatrist would charge. His ad went on to say, “I will not give advice; I will not judge you; I will not report anything you say to anyone. Completely confidential. I will simply listen.”
I wonder how this would go over today?

Oh my gosh, I didn’t know I could charge for my listening ear. 11.5 hours x $15? Hahahaha
I love this story! My personal opinion is that if we just listen as you described, there would be less mental problems. People need cared about and the best way to show that is our ears. What’s your take? BTW, what is the entrepreneur’s phone number, asking for a friend. Heehee
Happy New Year to you, Anita and Jon. πβ€π

Don’t know the old phone number; never saw the ad myself but read about it.
But my number is on my home page if your “friend” ever needs a listening ear… and no charge. Just leave a message on the first call until I get the number in my directory.
