We were on a Maui vacation a few years ago and rented bikes. I hadn’t ridden in 20 years. The statement about never forgetting how to ride a bike, not true. I was relearning and doing ok in the empty tennis court area, until I got kicked off by the security guard. I started up the condo pathway, swerved on a rock, fell over, hit my head and decided biking wasn’t for me.
Dave wanted to get rid of my bike at home, which remained unridden, yet I didn’t want to part with my Huffy. It was in the shed, in the way, for years.
Dave again asked me if we could get rid of the bike on a Friday. Our church announced that Sunday, “if you have an operable bike that you aren’t using, consider donating it to Alongside Ministries. Just drop it off at church and we will deliver them.”
Yes! We gave it away the next day, after making sure it was operable.
It is a God wink as they say on the Hallmark Channel! It is so much easier to part with something when you know it is needed by someone else.

Good post, Marla! My wife did some skateboarding as a child. At a family gathering many years later (she was 29YO), somebody brought out a skateboard and she hopped on to show our two young sons “how it was done.” She fell and fractured her femur which led to close to 40 years of various complications.

Oh my goodness Tom, that’s terrible. Your poor wife. I was just watching a girl at our park of maybe 8, on a skateboard. Kids make it look so simple! Did your sons ever try skateboarding after your wife’s experience?

Wow, Marla, I love that you ended this by thanking God for his opportunities! Sometimes we forget how much of a blessing it is to be in a position to donate anything, as so many in the world don’t have that possibility. It is only recently that I have begun to understand that serving others is a privilege, because there are people who have such limited means that they are never able to serve anyone else.
