This song came from a movie “In His Steps.” It’s called “Just the Brush.” Simply beautiful.
“But we’re just tools within His hands, used to carry out His plans.”
"Just The Brush"
When you see a great Picasso, D'Vinci, or Rembrandt
Do you ever sing the praises of their brush
It's the master of the masterpiece who deserves the praise
Not the paint they use of blue or green or blush
So don't praise me if I do something wonderful
Don't praise me, don't even make a fuss
Give glory to the Master, through His hands it was done
Don't praise me, I am just the brush
When you read the words of Shakespeare, Bunyan, or Thoreau
Do you ever glorify the pens they used
It's the author of the classic work who is glorified
Not the pen and ink and not the words they choose
So don't praise me if I do something wonderful
Don't praise me, don't even make a fuss
Give glory to the Master, through His hands it was done
Don't praise me, I am just the brush
It's easy to forget sometimes
And become legends in our minds
But we're just tools within His hands
Used to carry out His plans
So don't praise me if I do something wonderful
Don't praise me, don't even make a fuss
Give glory to the Master, through His hands it was done
Don't praise me, I am just the brush
Don't praise me, I am just the brush
Praise the Lord, I am just His brush

Mother Teresa said that she was just a little pencil in the hands of God who used her to write a love letter to others. Beautiful!

I love music and have a deep appreciation for words. Words put to song often become my “prayer language”.
This song is true, and yet I feel maybe not the full truth. Scripture teaches we are the only God-breathed beings, the only ones titled “Imago Dei” – made in the very image of God. While we are made to give Him glory, to diminish our status as uniquely created beings down to “just tools” seems to potentially diminish God’s design, His beauty, and His majesty. Not that we are to be worshipped or to think more highly of ourselves than we ought. But we are pretty amazing creations, and I that’s worth taking notice!

Hi David….Mmm, I get it. You’re deciphering between being in God’s image and humility. ❤ Thank you for joining my blog and taking your time to read and comment! ❤

Thank you for sharing these meaningful lyrics, based on lovely imagery. I’m reminded of one of my favorite verses: “From him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36). Among its other applications, this verse is a worthy truth to keep in mind as we seek to serve God with humility.

I wasn’t familiar with this scripture and I’m glad you shared. It is going in my memorized scriptures book. Simple to remember yet very deep and insightful. Thank you Nancy. May God bless you!

Since you found this verse meaningful, Marla, you may wish to read Romans 11:33-35 too. The four verses together have ministered to me again and again when circumstances haven’t made sense.

Just read. When I’m feeling prideful, this puts everything in perspective. I love Job towards the end, for that purpose too!

Oh, yes, the passage in Romans echos what God says to Job at the end of that book. Both passages help me to relinquish my desires and accept God’s, with the affirmation that he knows best.
